Richmond Views Exhibition

I have lived in the borough of Richmond upon Thames for just over 12 years now. I remember when I first arrived visiting Orleans House Gallery which is close to where I live, nestled away in secluded woodland gardens next to the River Thames with stunning 18th century interior design. On my first visit years ago, I was blown away by the beautiful grounds surrounding the gallery.

Orleans House Gallery has a rich and vibrant history, from the baroque Octagon room, which was designed by renowned architect James Gibbs, to a main gallery which hosts five temporary exhibitions each year – ranging from the historical to the contemporary. They attract over 56,000 visitors annually.

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit their latest exhibition Richmond Views which is a special open fundraising exhibition for the ambitious Transforming Orleans House project. Richmond Views showcases the work of contemporary artists coming together in celebration of the boroughs natural beauty that continue to take our breath away. Richmond Views has explored the boroughs landscapes, urban environment, buildings and inhabitants through a variety of media and styles by some truly skilled and talented artists. Here are a few must see art works from the exhibition.

Heterotopia 3 by Brenda Ross Richie was the first piece that caught my eye. I have seen it many times in passing. She has beautifully captured a floating raft / home on the River Thames just next to Marble Hill Park with an excellent and striking use of oils on canvas.

The next to stand out for me was Richmond Riverside, watercolour on paper by James Cowan. I am not usually a fan of water colours but for me, in this piece they really work. The Doors of Richmond Green by Mary Beth Sutter is well worth seeing in person. I love the richness and strong sense of connection, like a woven fabric.

Julian Bovis exhibited two pieces depicting scenes of Richmond Riverside and the boat shed, these too should be seen in person to appreciate the skill and meticulous detail afforded in his works.
